A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine that is somewhat like a forklift. It enables the operator to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain things, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Typically, order pickers are powered by electricity. These machinery are mainly utilized in a warehouse setting. Usually they are utilized for moving pallets and finishing particular tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The operator of an order picker uses controls to control the unit from a platform setting that normally sits fairly close to the ground. The operator can direct the machinery to go forward, backward or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the tines could be raised to the required level that makes it convenient for the operator. Like for instance, if the materials required, are located on a shelf which the operator cannot reach, then whole platform can be lifted up to certain level. Due to the counterweight situated at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker while the platform is raised, although, some companies may have procedures and policies in place preventing such maneuvers in the name of safety. An order picker can also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers can be utilized to finish these specific tasks at several companies instead.
