The forklift is a material handling device used to raise and transport loads from one location to another. Each part of a forklift has a particular function. Various parts can be utilized to move the load horizontally or vertically.

Mast
The forklift mast refers to all the parts which lift and lower the load. There are various types of masts for raising loads to various heights: quad, simplex, duplex and triplex.

Power Supply
Forklifts have four different ways of being powered: gas, electric, diesel and propane. The battery is located within the cab underneath the seat. The propane tank is located on the rear of the truck. The fuel tank on diesel and gas forklifts is underneath the rear of the truck.

Cab
The forklift cab is positioned within the center of the truck. This is where the operator sits and accesses all the controls and informational gauges. The steering wheel, gas pedal, tilting controls, brake and lifting controls are all situated within the cab.

Frame
Carrying all the largest forklift parts is the frame of the truck. This includes the counterweights situated at the rear which prevents the truck from tipping over when loaded. The frame consists of the overhead guard which protects the operator. The undercarriage holds the axles, wheels and driveshaft.
